North & West Yorkshire Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (NWY ASBAH)
Reg. Charity Number 252129
The North & West Yorkshire Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (NWY ASBAH) is a registered charity supporting children, adults and families with hydrocephalus and or spina bifida in North & West Yorkshire.
By supporting, informing, and campaigning the Association is continuing to help promote individual choice, control, and quality of life for all the people who use our services.
We are affiliated with the National Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH), but we are a charity in our own right with our own charity number and we have to raise our own funds for our work. We have very recently expanded our area to include areas where unfortuantly the local associations were unable to go on due to lack of support and/or funding.
We are commited to helping and supporting all our service users. We originally started out as the Leeds Association in 1966 primarily as a parent organisation and we became a registered charity in 1967. Currently we have a membership of over 500, including in excess of 350 disabled members.

The North & West Yorkshire ASBAH maintain very close links with the national charity ASBAH. Particularly the North of England & West Midlands Region (NEWMO) as they kindly let us use part of their office for our work.
Part of the service from NEWMO includes letting our members access the regional advisers who provide much needed support to our members & their families.
The Regional Advisers
A regional adviser is the first source of advice for families. The adviser has ready access to a range of literature and helps families directly or points them to more specialist agencies. Also, where appropriate, advisers liaise, support and work with professionals, e.g. those in education, social services, housing, workplace, etc, to ensure families get the services they are eligible to receive.
The regional adviser can also contact the specialist adviser (medical and continence), based in the Regional Office for advice and support on educational issues. Service users and professionals can also contact the Regional Adviser for any help they need.
Specialist advice on medical matters is available to the local adviser via the National Office of ASBAH in Peterborough.
